Our party has always believed in the importance of equality – that all people are born equal and deserve equal opportunities. NDP governments have made substantial progress in the past, and we will again. But we need the collective strength of everyone working together. I will be working for reforms to our democracy to ensure that all voices are heard and to improve the quality of political debate in our province.
Growing up on a Saskatchewan farm, it seemed times were always tough. But I saw from an early age through my parents and grandparents, the benefits of collective action and working together. We have something special in Saskatchewan – we can pull together to demonstrate tremendous support for people. You can see it in the progressive programs we built. We need a social safety net for the private suffering people face – the things that aren’t in the news. Our communities are threatened by the callous cuts of the Sask. Party.
It’s not enough to win government if we simply do the same things as any right-wing government would. We will need courage to act. Whether it’s in my legal practice, on non-profit boards or within the NDP, I have a reputation for having the courage to ask hard questions and make difficult decisions. We need to have a strong voice for public healthcare and crown corporations. We need a strong voice for labour unions to protect the rights of working men and women. We need a strong voice for the people in our community who struggle to make ends meet. NDP governments have made substantial progress in the past, and we will again with the collective strength of everyone working together.
